On March 6, 2026, the Financial University hosted the XII All-Russian Scientific and Practical Conference titled “Cycles and Crises of Socio-Economic Development: Challenges of Understanding and Strategic Intentions” — the March readings in memory of Doctor of Economics, Professor, and Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Dmitry Evgenievich Sorokin.
During the conference, participants discussed a wide range of topics including methodologies for studying cycles and crises in Russia’s development, major issues in political economy amid labor and capital transformation, and the emergence of new techno-economic blocs against the backdrop of a fragmented global economy. Special attention was given to theoretical insights on banking crises, mechanisms for financing technological development, and the role of financial markets in structural reforms.
Pavel Seleznev, Dean of the Faculty of International Economic Relations at Financial University, welcomed attendees by emphasizing the unique tone of the event:
"Officially, this is an All-Russian scientific and practical conference, but in essence it’s a meeting of friends and like-minded people — those who knew Dmitry Evgenievich Sorokin personally and those who, even without personal acquaintance, continue his scientific work. It is heartening that each year the conference gains momentum and that the discussions here inspire profound follow-up efforts in the professional community."
Valery Fadeev, Advisor to the President of the Russian Federation and Chairman of the Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights, stressed the importance of holistic education beyond narrow skills development:
"Humanities are essential to understanding the directions of society’s future development — they provide the coordinate system in which technological solutions gain human meaning. Preparing specialists must include familiarity with three fundamental ways of knowing the world: science, art, and religion. We need not just effective workers, but reflective individuals who understand the historical context and the value-based foundations of their actions."
Ramazan Abdulatipov, Scientific Director of the Institute for Global Studies at the Faculty of International Economic Relations, highlighted Russia’s special role in shaping a new world order:
"The future belongs to the union of spiritual civilization countries, and Russia should be the center of this attraction. We need philosophical and methodological sovereignty so that our ideas gain strength and form a new, just reality."
Marina Fedotova, Deputy Scientific Director at the Financial University, noted that the university is forming an interdisciplinary economics research school in response to scientific and technological transformations:
"The main goal of the ‘Priority-2030’ program is to transform universities into hubs of scientific, technological, and socio-economic development for the country. At the Financial University, we aim to provide an intellectual framework — from promoting domestic high-tech products in global markets to developing the foundations of financial sovereignty, which is essential for true national independence."
Mikhail Khazin, President of the Economic Research Foundation, spoke on transforming the global financial architecture, emphasizing long-term trends such as the decline of industrial production in developed countries alongside sustained high consumption and the growing role of the financial sector. According to Khazin, these changes call for an update to the theoretical foundations of economic science.
The conference also featured contributions from prominent experts including Albert Bakhtizin, Director of the Central Economic-Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Corresponding Member of RAS; Mikhail Golovnin, Director of the Institute of Economics at RAS; Vladimir Milovidov, Deputy Director for Research at the Primakov National Research Institute of World Economy and International Relations; Alexey Bobrovsky, Economic Analyst and Director of the Institute for Global Market Studies; Marina Abramova, Head of the Department of Banking and Monetary Regulation at Financial University’s Faculty of Finance; among others.
