Program description

The program provides training of specialists of the financial market, the core of which is the securities and derivatives market. Being closely connected with all other segments of the financial market, this market accumulates the results of information technology and society’s innovative achievements, demonstrating the expansion of traded instruments, the complexity of their designs, and the new trading technologies’ implementation. Since the late 80-s of the twentieth century, financial engineering has been rapidly developing as a new direction in financial markets based on securities and derivative transactions. Its main content is the construction of complex financial products for risk management, liquidity and profitability, the creation of new financial instruments, stock market segments and combined investment strategies in accordance with the structure of demand presented by clients of investment and commercial banks. An integral part of financial engineering is the securitization of traditional banking and insurance products, the creation of financial instruments’ unique compositions based on their risk, profitability and liquidity that meet the characteristics and market interests. The securities and derivatives market is a high-tech market in which only professionals with analytical thinking, the ability to financial creativity, the ability to freely apply knowledge in financial mathematics, information technology and international finance are able to work successfully.

Upon completion of the program, graduates will be able to

  • Carry out transactions and operations with securities and derivative financial instruments within the framework of professional activities in the securities market and other activities in the financial markets;
  • Manage the investment portfolio of individual and institutional investors based on fundamental and technical analysis, assessment of financial instruments, assessment of financial risks and risk management of the investment portfolio;
  • Independently develop innovative solutions to financial and economic problems for economic entities of different levels based on the use of methods and financial engineering tools;
  • Be able to rank strategic and tactical economic development goals at macro, meso and micro levels; use factual (statistical and economic-mathematical) methods for analysis and system assessments;
  • Apply methodological tools of system analysis and modeling of economic processes to justify the innovative developments’ introduction to gain competitive advantages and ensure outstripping growth in new and emerging markets;
  • Develop and apply methods for assessment of economic projects’ effectiveness in conditions of uncertainty.

Securities Market and Stock Exchange

The discipline deepens and expands basic theoretical and applied knowledge of organizing the securities’ market participants' activities, on developing and implementing modern technologies in their activities.

Foreign Financial Markets

The study of the organization and functioning of the foreign financial markets, the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of their development, the instruments applied to them, the participants, the existing systems of state regulation.

Trading Organization on the Stock Exchange

Formation of practice-oriented knowledge about organizational, economic, and technological aspects of Moscow Stock Exchange markets.

Analysis of Financial Markets

The purpose of the discipline is to form a system of knowledge on how to apply fundamental and technical analysis in making investment decisions in capital management in financial markets.

Derivative Financial Instruments: Hedging And Arbitrage

Students will know more about functioning of the derivative financial instruments’ markets, quantitative and structural characteristics of the derivatives market and modern models of their pricing.

Financial Engineering

Students will acquire knowledge and skills in designing complex financial products for risk management, liquidity and profitability, creation of new financial instruments, development of combined investment strategies.
