International Financial Laboratory

IFF offers students, faculty, and university researchers access to a vast array of data, industry and company reports, stock quotes, analysis, financial news, and other information needed by any economist, not just a trader or investment analyst, with global coverage. Statistical and analytical materials ready for use for homework, term papers, diplomas, theses, and scientific research are provided by the Bloomberg information and analysis agency. Our laboratory uses 9 licenses of this professional system, which allows us to coordinate and conduct quantitative research using multidimensional arrays of financial and economic data. We are ready to offer you the opportunity to conduct scientific research and create educational materials according to the most advanced global standards, using the power of an unlimited and dynamic network of data, news and analysis, the result of the work of the Bloomberg with more than 15,000 employees in 192 locations around the world.

The IFF aims to develop research skills, conduct interdisciplinary innovative research and improve the educational process by saturating it with practical material. To achieve this high result, the Laboratory aims to create research and methodological programs of international level, in order to maintain the high authority of the FinU, in terms of quality and innovation of scientific research by our scientists, a high level of educational and research process.

To achieve its goal, the Laboratory solves the following tasks:

  • Creation of a research infrastructure at the level of the best scientific and educational centers in the world,
  • Research integration - active participation of leading international research organizations in the development, implementation and quality control of IFF research programs,
  • Academic integration - IFF actively cooperates with leading Russian and foreign academic research centers,
  • Information integration - cooperation with leading providers of information for professionals in finance; using their resources to develop the skills of students, faculty of the FinU in working with professional information systems; publishing the English-language peer-reviewed scientific journal on the world economy "Review of Business and Economics Studies"; as well as preparing publications in international peer-reviewed journals.
  • Relying on a serious information and communication infrastructure, IFF also plans to provide technical and methodological support to all departments of the FinU in the educational process using Bloomberg data, to carry out professional development of the FinU faculty, to organize training in continuing education programs (CFA, derivatives, algorithmic trading and data mining). IFF closely cooperates and expects to continue this cooperation with the Bloomberg University (commercial internationally certified seminars of various levels of complexity and on various types of activities).

The most important of our achievements:

  • Bloomberg London employees give a series of lectures to faculty members, graduates and students on the functionality of various levels (free of charge for the University) with obtaining certificates after passing exams (≈ 100 students and 28 faculty members).
  • According to statistics, at the end of the 2013-2014 academic year, IFF attracted more than 140 active users. On average, 5 new users were added per week. (Each user accesses an average of 20 to 500 Bloomberg functions (pages) per week).
  • Courses were held on Portfolio Investment (A.S. Didenko), Behavioral Finance (S.Y. Bogatyrev), Financial Analysis (O.V. Efimova), etc. (about 23 courses), using Bloomberg data and functionality.
  • There is a FinU page in Bloomberg (only 7 universities in the world have the same). It regularly publishes articles from ROBES magazine, research reports (on risk assessment, energy demand forecasting, etc.) prepared using methods developed by the FinU. Access to the materials is open to all users of the Bloomberg system (more than 300 thousand investment professionals around the world).
  • Regular scientific seminars are held with foreign professors and representatives of Bloomberg, researchers of the FinU and branches. Assistance to branches in obtaining the necessary data from Bloomberg (the laboratory's own development).
  • - I/a Bloomberg Aptitude Test (BAT) is carried out, a globally standardized test that assesses students' abilities for careers in business and finance. The results are entered into the Bloomberg recruitment database. Its clients include major investment banks, hedge and mutual funds, brokerage firms and other companies around the world.
  • Some of our developments in online education, the creation of Bloomberg applications integrating its data and functionality with the FinU developments, a series of textbooks with Bloomberg functionality and some others are in the implementation stage.
