The museum's origins date back to 1939, when the leadership of the Moscow Credit and Economic Institute of the State Bank of the USSR (MKEI) decided to create a numismatic collection to illustrate the history of credit and monetary relations, as well as the role of money in the economy.

The core of the exhibit features authentic items that reflect the history of currency circulation in Russia during that period: wallets, coin purses, stationery, books, photographs, pre-revolutionary Russian securities from the early 20th century, banknotes from Imperial Russia at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries, treasury notes from the Provisional Government, banknotes and paper money from White Guard governments during Russia’s Civil War, as well as Soviet and modern Russian currency.

The museum’s exhibits are not static or permanently fixed; instead, they are subject to ongoing expansion in both chronological scope and thematic content. The goal is to continually enrich and illustrate Russia’s financial history through new acquisitions and displays
