Department of Management and Innovation

About the department

The Department of Management was established on September 1, 2002 on the basis of the former Department of Management and Innovation.

The successful development of the Department of Management as one of the leading platforms of management education in Russia over the past four years has allowed the Department of Management formed during the reorganization to further improve three main areas of work from a high starting point: building the capacity of the faculty members to intensify scientific and educational activities, cooperation with leading foreign partner universities, and the creation of corporate partnerships with companies.

The Department has strong, long-term partnerships with representatives of real business, including KPMG, Russian Railways, Vnesheconombank, Rosseti, Goznak, Krypten, KM-Alliance, ETS Group, Market Council, as well as with executive authorities: Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Economic Development, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Finance. Within the framework of these partnerships, joint events are held, practitioners are invited to give lectures to undergraduate and graduate students, and joint scientific activities are carried out.

Currently, the Department of Management sees its mission in taking the lead in the Russian market of educational and research services in management, and the purpose of the Department of Management is to integrate research and experimental analytical work with educational activities, ensuring a high level of teaching and research activities.

The Department of Management is a postgraduate department for undergraduate students of 38.03.02 Management and postgraduate students of 38.04.02 Management.

The subject of professional activity of the graduates of the bachelor's degree program 38.03.02 Management are the processes of implementation of managerial decisions in organizations of various organizational and legal forms, as well as in state and municipal administration.

The field of professional activity of the alumni of the master’s degree Program in Management, who graduated on 38.04.2002, includes:

  • Management activities in organizations of any organizational and legal form, in which alumni work as performers or managers in various services of the management apparatus,
  • Management activities in state and municipal authorities,
  • Entrepreneurial and organizational activities in structures where alumni are entrepreneurs who create and develop their own business,
  • Research activities in scientific organizations related to the solution of management problems,
  • Research and teaching activities in higher education institutions and organizations of continuing professional education.

Management has the following basic characteristics:

  • Management is a complex process. As the number of management objects increases, the level of management complexity increases significantly. This is especially true in modern conditions of digital society;
  • Management is specialized - it means that management is a special kind of human activity and it is separate from other types and forms of human work;
  • Management is continuous, i.e. the management of almost any object, and especially the management of socio-economic objects, should be based on regularity and continuity;
  • Management is elitist - in other words, managers as subjects of management must be the best prepared, most intelligent people, otherwise management processes will have low efficiency;
  • Management is specific - it means that management decisions are always aimed at solving specific management tasks;
  • Information management, i.e. management processes are closely related to information flows, and in fact management itself can be considered a special information process;
  • Management is creative. This means that the manager is often faced with a situation where it is necessary to make creative, non-standard decisions in order to solve the existing problematic situations.
  • Management has a dual character: on the one hand, management is a technology of activity and theoretical knowledge expressed in academic disciplines of management, on the other hand, management is a special art that each manager masters individually.
