Faculty of Social Sciences and Mass Communications

About the Faculty

The Faculty of Social Sciences and Mass Communications (until 30.06.2020 – the Faculty of Sociology and Political Science) of the Financial University was established on February 1, 2011 by Order of the Rector, based on the previously opened Faculty of Law and Political Science and the Faculty of Management and Sociology.

About the program

Our basic principles

Elitism. The Faculty is not training ordinary specialists, but new generation experts within the framework of the state project dedicated to creating a pool of Russian intellectual elite. Its alumni are expected to acquire the knowledge and skills required in both public administration and corporate structures top positions.

Interdisciplinarity. The peculiarity of the programs offered is a synthesis of different fields of knowledge. On the one hand, it is sociology and political science, and on the other, it is finance and economics. We prepare specialists of “a broader profile”, able to give not a “one-sided”, but complex analysis of current processes. Our alumni are professionals, who are equally competent in the issues related to politics, social affairs, and bureaucratic interaction at the level of power institutions, as well as in the practical activities of domestic and foreign business. They can compare and compile a single intellectual scheme of seemingly “separate” economic and socio-political issues, which are “a signature” of our Faculty.

Modernity. Both students and alumni of the Faculty are perceived as qualified and effective specialists, who are trained in the framework of modern educational methods and possess the most advanced knowledge in the “specialized” sphere. At the same time, the training is based on the active use of the latest audio-visual tools and additional resources (computer databases, specialized programs of mathematical modeling of political processes, etc.).

Applied character of training. During the educational and scientific-research training of students at the Faculty, a special emphasis is placed on the applied character of education. This, of course, does not preclude studying theory in accordance with educational standards, however, the very nature of the training is as close as possible to real-life conditions of work of a professional political scientist and sociologist. This, in particular, is facilitated by the introduction of a number of applied courses and electives, organization of internships in state bodies, as well as in analytical and PR departments of business structures. We invite leading specialists who can not only put theory and practice together, but also share examples from their own experience.

Universality. It is planned that alumni of the Faculty will acquire the knowledge enabling them to carry out activities in a wide variety of political, social, ideological and world-view environments, to understand the logic of working in government bodies and corporate structures, realistically evaluate their chances in the labor market, and properly present themselves to the employer.
