General information

The Federal State Educational Budgetary Institution of Higher Education “Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation” (hereinafter referred to as FinU) is one of the oldest Russian universities training economists, financiers, lawyers in financial law, mathematicians, IT specialists, sociologists and political scientists.

FinU started as an institute, an academy specializing in training specialists in the financial and banking sector, to a large scientific and educational complex. Currently, the educational and scientific structure of the FinU includes 8 faculties, which include: 30 educational and scientific departments; 7 scientific institutes; 10 educational and scientific centers; 18 laboratories; 18 departments, 14 of them basic: business incubator, FinU Business School (Institute) and Legal Clinic “Legal Support Center”. In addition, there are educational and scientific departments that are not part of the faculties, including 2 educational and scientific departments, 2 departments, Institute of Online Education, 9 scientific institutes and centers, 2 colleges, lyceum, 7 institutes, 2 centers and 5 higher schools of continuing education, Military Training Center.

The branch network has 27 branches, including 9 branches implementing higher education programs; 8 branches implementing higher and secondary vocational education programs; 10 branches implementing secondary vocational education programs, 1 faculties and 55 departments as part of higher education branches.

The total number of students enrolled in basic educational programs at the beginning of the 2021/2022 academic year was 47,245, including 32,648 full-time students, 3,064 full-time students, 11,533 part-time students. According to higher education programs – 33,686 people (bachelor’s degree – 35,242, master’s degree – 4,103), 12,003 students in secondary vocational education programs, 147 students in secondary general education programs.

FinU is a leading university of the Russian Federation, implementing 20 bachelor’s degree programs, 1 specialist’s degree programs, 20 master’s degree programs, 16 postgraduate training programs for faculty, 7 specialties of secondary vocational education. In 27 branches, 12 bachelor’s degree programs, 9 master’s degree programs, 7 specialties of secondary vocational education are being implemented. Secondary general education programs are implemented by the Lyceum of the FinU. The University (including branches) also implements 120 professional retraining programs, including MBA programs, 385 advanced training programs.

FinU is steadily expanding its presence in the world and national educational rankings, is in the top 1000 best universities in the world (interval group 801-1000 in the best universities’ ranking in the world QS World University Ranking WUR), ranks 140th in the QS Emerging Europe & Central Asia EECA – ranking of the best universities in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

In the subject rankings of the QS agency, FinU also occupies high positions – 365th place in the world and 8th in Russia in the concentration “Social Sciences and Management”, demonstrating excellent results in other concentrations: “Accounting and Finance” – 251st-300th in the world/3rd in Russia, “Economics and Econometrics” – 201st-250th/4th, “Business and Management” – 301st-350th/5th.

FinU is among world’s best universities in terms of its impact on the society sustainable development and involvement in achieving the global sustainable development goals defined by the UN, ranking in the range of 401st-600th in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings (THE) and eighth among Russian universities participating in this study.

FinU consistently holds high positions in other international rankings: in “Three Missions of the University” 501st-550th place among the world’s best universities and 19th place among Russian universities; 2nd place in the IAAR Eurasian University Ranking; is in the top 10 of the ARES ranking of the European Chamber of Science and Industry.

In the universities’ ranking of the SCImago Institutes Rankings research group (Spain), based on scientometric data from Scopus, FinU ranks 663rd in the world and 74th among Russian universities; in the concentration “Economics, Econometrics and Finance” – 122nd in the world/3rd in Russia, “Energy” – 306/9, “Business, Management and Accounting” – 369th/5th, “Arts and Humanities” – 409th/11th, “Mathematics” – 613rd/64th, “Social Sciences” – 652nd/19th.

FinU is also highly evaluated by national educational rankings’ experts. According to the Russian ranking agency RAEX-Analytics, FinU ranks 14th among the 100 best universities in Russia, 6rd in terms of the demand level for alumni by employers, 14th in terms of conditions for obtaining a quality education.

In the subject rankings of the ecosystem “Three Missions of the FinU”, FinU is marked in the following concentrations: “Economics” – 4th place, “Management” – 5th place, “Law” – 7th place, “Sociology” – 8th place, “Philology and Journalism” – 13th place, “Mathematics” – 20th place.

FinU is in the top 25 of the National Ranking of universities according to Interfax, ranks 6th among universities providing training in the concentration of “State and Municipal Administration”.

The analytical center “Expert” has marked the FinU among the best universities in 9 subject areas and 2 subject sections at once: “Humanities” (10th-12th), “Management” (11th), “Economics” (14th-16th), "Social Sciences" (16th-18th), "Ecology" (17th-18th), "Mathematics" (26th), “Renewable energy” (29th-31st), “Energy” (30th), “Artificial Intelligence” (30th-31st), “Computer Science” (39th-42nd), “Engineering Sciences” (42nd).

In the ranking of entrepreneurial universities and business schools of the AC “Expert” ranking, FinU ranks 3rd; 4th in the number of startups (59 startups) and 3rd in investment volumes attracted by startups ($191.7 million).

FinU annually ranks among the top five in terms of employers’ demand for university alumni, the level of their salaries, the university influence, the communication effectiveness and entrepreneurial universities’ ranking (according to Forbes magazine, Russia Today, Head Hunter, SuperJob, etc.), FinU is also recognized as the second green university in Russia, which has demonstrated high environmental performance indicators.

Education Quality

FinU has created its own system for assessing the education quality. The main direction in education quality is the creation and development of mechanisms to ensure the quality of alumni’s training in accordance with the requirements of federal state educational standards, standards set by the university independently. Education quality is highly appreciated by the external environment (rankings, international, public and professional accreditation) and the internal environment (student surveys, monitoring of the effectiveness and quality of educational programs).

75% of bachelor’s and master’s degree programs have quality marks of external independent assessment – international and professional and public accreditation. All educational programs are designed and implemented jointly with partner employers.

Since 2023, the implementation of bachelor’s and master’s degree programs has been launched with the possibility of obtaining double degrees simultaneously.

Since 2021, the “2+2” system has been implemented at the FinU. After two years, students have formed universal skills that reflect the needs of the individual and society as a whole for the general cultural and socio-personal qualities of the alumni, basic professional knowledge has been formed that expands the horizons suitable for all profiles. The next two years are intended for a deeper study of specialized disciplines directly related to the chosen professional trajectory.

FinU is among the leading universities that have the right to develop their own educational standards. In total, 13 University’s bachelor’s degree educational standards and 14 University’s master’s degree educational standards have been developed, updated and approved, as well as requirements for training programs for the faculty in the postgraduate course of the FinU. About 80% of educational programs are implemented according to their own educational standards.

The development of the FinU educational activity is characterized by the expansion of the educational field and the constant updating of the implemented educational programs’ content.

Olympiads and Career Guidance

In the 2021/2022 academic year, more than 70 Olympiads were held at the FinU. The number of participants in the Olympiads is growing every year. So, if in 2017, as part of the Olympiad, “The mission is possible. Your vocation is a financier!” more than 10,000 people took part, then in 2020/2021 the number of participants increased to 52,500 people. In the 2019/2020 academic year, the Olympiad was included in the List of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in the profile “History”. In the 2020/2021 academic year, the Olympiad was held for the first time in the English language profile. The geography of the Olympiad has also expanded: 85 regions of the Russian Federation, neighboring countries – Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine, as well as a number of foreign countries - Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Burundi, Vietnam, China, Mongolia, Serbia, Turkey. New venues have appeared – in addition to 27 branches of the FinU and partner universities, the Olympiad is held on the basis of regional centers for identifying talented youth in Arkhangelsk, Kaliningrad, Rostov-on-Don, Stavropol, Syktyvkar, Khabarovsk, Shadrinsk, Yakutsk.

FinU is expanding its partner base and expanding the number of organizations with which it cooperates in organizing and conducting Olympiads and other intellectual tests. Among partner Olympiads:

  • All-Russian Olympiad for Schoolchildren (Social Studies);
  • Moscow School Olympiad (History and Social Studies);
  • Interregional Economic Olympiad for Schoolchildren named after N.D. Kondratiev;
  • Interdisciplinary Olympiad of Schoolchildren named after V.I. Vernadsky;
  • National Technological Olympiad;
  • All-Russian Olympiad on Financial Literacy, Financial Market and Consumer Protection of Financial Services;
  • International Financial Security Olympiad;
  • All-Russian Olympiad for students “I am a professional” (in the concentrations of “Personnel Management” and “Tourism”), as well as annual educational forums as part of the Olympiad;
  • All-Russian student competition “Your Move”, etc.

To unlock the potential and develop creative abilities of FinU students, the Student Olympiad Club is successfully functioning. This club includes students who are winners of Olympiads and other intellectual competitions. The number of club members is growing every year. The Club’s goal is to develop the Olympiad movement at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation. For the members of the Student Olympiad Club, a unique opportunity was provided to study a second foreign language for free (French, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Italian, German).

The most talented and gifted participants represent the FinU at major international competitions. The most significant victories were brought by students to the FinU in the UK, Canada, Belgorod, Sochi.

As part of the work with talented youth for various age categories, a complex of career guidance events is held at the FinU on an ongoing basis, among which it is worth highlighting FINrise, the Youth Financial League, the Festival “Hope of the Future”, the Forum “Point of Growth”, “University of Dreams”, “Exciting Vacations of Generation Z”, “University Saturdays”, Festival of Financial Literacy, “It's Time for Parks”, Alumnus at the State Kremlin Palace, a Week of Professional Orientation at faculties, Excursions from employers to schoolchildren.

FinU organizes autumn/winter/spring youth programs in the Lesnoe Ozero Resort, Artek International Child Center, Russian Children’s Centre Okean, Russian Children’s Centre Orlyonok, Russian Children’s Centre Smena, as well as summer youth programs in Russia and abroad (Bulgaria, Italy).

In 2021, the Center for Assessment and Development of Managerial Competencies was opened on the basis of the FinU,”where students can undergo diagnostics of their leadership and managerial skills, developed by the methodologists of the ANO “Russia - Land of Opportunity”. During its operation, the Center has attracted more than 1,700 students. Not only students from Moscow, but also students from other regions of the Russian Federation are actively involved in projects and diagnostics of supra-professional skills and competencies.

Library and Information Complex

The main priority in the work of the Library and Information Complex is to attract all categories of users on the basis of prompt and high-quality library and bibliographic services, and the active use of global and domestic scientific and educational resources. Currently, the Library and Information Complex consists of 10 libraries in Moscow and 27 libraries in regional branches. The Library and Information Complex structure also includes 21 coworking zones. The book printing stock is 733,009 units of storage: including scientific, educational literature, literature in foreign languages, the fund of dissertations, periodicals, the fund of fiction, a collection of rarities of economic subjects. The Library and Information complex is equipped with technical means: computer equipment (374 computers), printers, MFPs, copiers, scanners, RFID equipment, plasma panels, projectors, devices for charging phones, servers. The local network of the Library and Information Complex is integrated into the university-wide computer network. An integral part of the Library and Information Complex foundation is a collection of e-resources that informatively supports the educational process and scientific work of the. To date, the collection unites 104 full-text databases and services with a volume of more than 495 million documents, which are accessed both by IP addresses of the FinU and remotely. Resources are available around the clock from any device, at the university and online. The Library and Information Complex actively uses the capabilities of social networks, blogs to promote services, study the target audience, is represented in Telegram, VKontakte, Yandex.Zen, RuTube.

Scientific Activity

The main objectives of the FinU in the scientific activity are:

  • development of relevant areas of scientific research as a basis for the creation of new knowledge, the formation and development of scientific schools and leading scientific and pedagogical teams;
  • effective use of the FinU scientific potential to solve urgent problems in the financial and economic sphere and to carry out socio-economic transformations in Russia;
  • creating conditions for the integration of scientific and educational activities;
  • ensuring the creation of scientific, educational and methodological products in demand in the FinU educational process and beyond;
  • protection of intellectual property of the FinU;
  • active involvement of students in scientific activities, the formation of their creative approach to solving practical problems of the upcoming professional activity;
  • improvement of cooperation with scientific and research specialized structures of the Russian Academy of Sciences, educational organizations of higher education, potential customers interested in the
  • implementation of scientific projects (developments) in the profile of the FinU;
  • expansion of international cooperation with educational institutions of higher education and scientific organizations of foreign countries to enter the world system of science and education and conduct joint scientific research;
  • creation of conditions for ensuring admission to the FinU of additional budgetary and extra-budgetary funds through research (provision of services) in the scientific field.
